Nokia Solutions and Networks’ Middle East & Africa region stretches from Morocco to Pakistan and from South Africa to Iraq and has a population of 1.2 billion people.

Countries included in this region are: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Republic of South Africa, Iraq, Kenya, Tanzania, Kuwait, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Libya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Angola, Pakistan, Bahrain, Burkina Faso, Congo B, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Malawi, Madagascar, Niger, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia and Lesotho.

We have close partnerships with 45 customers in our region, including some of the biggest names in the industry such as Vodafone Group, Zain Group, STC Group, Ooredoo Group, Etisalat Group and Bharti Group and many more.

We have 8 customers in the region who have launched LTE/4G networks. Some of the recent projects in the Middle East & Africa region include:

  • Providing a complete radio and core network infrastructure to enable Ooredoo to launch their 4G network and provide ultra-fast mobile broadband in Qatar.
  • touch, the leading mobile telecommunications operator in Lebanon simplifed their operations with an Umbrella network and service management solution from NSN and built a solid foundation for touch to further improve its customer experience management.
  • Vodacom Tanzania recently conducted a 4G (LTE - long term evolution) trial in Dar Es Salaam using NSN's Single RAN (radio access network) and Liquid Core* technology. In addition, the trial used NSN's Circuit Switched FallBack (CSFB)** voice call system enabling LTE mobile phones to fallback to GSM and 3G networks for voice calls. With this successful trial, Vodacom Tanzania is now in a perfect position to launch super fast 4G mobile broadband services in Tanzania.
  • Saudi Telecom Company (STC) once again teamed up with NSN to ensure millions of Hajj pilgrims enjoyed the best possible mobile service. NSN successfully ensured STC’s network performance remained high with 99.9% network availability, despite the huge increase in the traffic. As the sole GSM and 3G radio supplier, NSN provided STC with its Single Radio Access Network (RAN) and Special Event Support Services (SESS)*.
  • Vodacom South Africa’s 4G users can now enjoy voice calls and text messaging (SMS) along with their 4G service. To provide this service continuity, the operator has selected NSN’s Liquid Core* to enable circuit switched fall-back (CSFB)** functionality in its LTE network. This functionality allows 4G users to make and receive voice calls using either the GSM or 3G network while retaining the benefit of ultra-fast data services via LTE
  • The Saudi Arabian operator Zain KSA selected NSN as its LTE (4G) mobile broadband infrastructure and services vendor for Jeddah, the country’s second largest city. The operator aims to address the growing demand for mobile broadband and smartphone data services by refarming its 1800 MHz GSM frequency band to offer 4G services. As part of the contract, NSN will also manage Zain KSA’s 4G network in Jeddah, in addition to the operator’s existing GSM and 3G networks in the city.
  • In a series of recent deals, the Zain group is steadily strengthening its customer experience management capabilities by deploying advanced solutions from NSN.  Zain Kuwait is using live network monitoring, reporting and analytics software from NSN to provide improvements in mobile network quality, customer care service and tailored marketing campaigns. The solutions enable Zain to prioritize customer problems with its operations department and proactively solve them even before the customer notices that there’s an issue. This will help to speed up request and complaint resolution in customer care, boosting operational efficiency.
  • Subscribers of Saudi Telecom Company (STC) can expect a new generation of mobile broadband services with super-fast speeds of up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps). The operator has selected NSN to upgrade its nationwide GSM and 3G networks and expand its commercial 4G (TD-LTE: time division duplex long term evolution) network. NSN is now responsible for building one-third of STC’s nationwide 4G network. STC announced the launch of its commercial 4G network using TD-LTE equipment from NSN in September 2011*.
  • NSN has migrated the existing charging and billing system of Vodacom Tanzania to its own charge@once unified* platform. As a result of a long-term, trusted partnership, Vodacom Tanzania has commissioned Nokia Siemens Networks for this project. With the charge@once unified platform, Vodacom Tanzania’s customers can now flexibly choose either prepaid, post paid or a combination of both payment options for their voice, data and SMS services. The platform also offers a wide set of pre-defined modules that can be used to create marketing campaigns with minimal efforts and more flexibility in a shorter turnaround time.
